The Purpose of the Cancun Underwater Museum

MUSA seeks to provide its visitors with pristine coral reefs by giving an opportunity to appreciate art in a whole new way while conserving natural corals and the ecosystems that they bring to life.
This fine project also wishes to grow further more with a goal of over 1,000 underwater statues by many fine artists in the years to come.

This museum shows humans how we can all live in balance with nature and make a workable future between both. The negative show is how humans damage nature relentlessly by showing no care or sympathy towards these beautiful works of art done by nature herself.

Eco-Friendly Art

Each sculpture was carefully designed to become an artificial reef and they’ve all been carefully made with special materials that promote life within its structures!

Beautiful corals flourish from these sculptures creating outstanding underwater landscapes that breed and take in refuge an endless variety of marine life. From sea turtles to sea horses and dolphins to thousands of colorful exotic fish signature to the Caribbean waters of beautiful Mexico!

The appearance of these sculptures changes over time as coral grow and life colonizes each sculpture, you cannot miss this experience if you’re into diving in Cancun or snorkeling in Isla Mujeres.

The Underwater Museum Galleries

There are three galleries at the museum, two belong underwater and one is on land. MUSA has a permit to sink a total of 1,200 statues in different areas of the national park and so far, only 3 areas have been fully developed which is Manchones Reef and Punta Nizuc.

Getting the statues underwater isn’t an easy task, there’s a special lift made for these art pieces assuring that they will not be damaged during their sinking. Once the great sculptures are brought to the ocean, a huge 40 ton crane placed on a commercial ferry helps them get down there smoothly.
There are statues that weight so much, that lift bags had to be used to control the position of the statue as it was lowered to its place underwater.

There’s a third exhibit placed inside Plaza Kukulcán mall, with over 25 replicas and an original one, you’ll find a sculpture by Roberto Díaz named The Ocean Muse! Roberto Díaz is the cofounder of Cancun Underwater Museum and with Dr. Jaime González, the Director of the Marine Park, they’ve worked on creating this artistic underwater masterpiece!
