Navigating the adventure of deep sea fishing Cancun

Deep sea fishing Cancun offers the best combination of thrilling action, comfortable tropical weather and gorgeous turquoise waters: a true feast for the senses!

Whether you’re an experienced angler or a new enthusiast, practicing this sport in the waters surrounding Cancun will surely leave you with some great memories, but there are a few questions you may have regarding this activity.

What is deep sea fishing?

Known also as big-game fishingopen water fishing, offshore boat or blue-water fishing. Deep sea fishing is a form of recreational fishing done in over 30-meters-deep water. This type of fishing is considered to be riskier and more complicated than shallow water or lake fishing, due to the need for knowledge on weather patterns, navigation, and safety guidelines.

With the evolution of this sport, the equipment, and the boats also evolved. Through the 1920s and 30s, vessels started being adapted with outriggers, fighting chairs, bait boxes, flybridge helm stations, and other ancillaries.

Nowadays, deep sea fishing vessels can range from 18 ft to enormous 100 ft party boats. Though current deep sea fishing boats are huge top-notch pieces of equipment, they still closely resemble the design and layout of the 1940’s boats, used by sport fishermen of the likes of Ernest Hemingway; the famous author was a big fan of fishing the big-game species.

What kind of fish do you catch deep sea fishing?

TunaMarlin and sailfish are some of the big-game species you can catch while deep sea fishing in Cancun. Smaller game fish like dolphinfish and barracuda are also plentiful in the Caribbean waters.

Deep sea fishing species can be very large (think 500 to 1,500 pounds), so heavy tackle is needed. Offshore rods (preferably graphite) and reels with a powerful torque are a must. The use of live bait, such as the whole mackerel, is also highly recommended.

What to wear deep sea fishing?

Fortunately, there’s no dressing code for fishing charters in Cancun, so feel free to wear whatever you like…however, there are a few recommendations we’d like to give you.

Do wear light and comfortable clothing; bear in mind you’ll be “exercising” under the Caribbean sun AND you’ll be aboard a boat. A light long sleeve could be great in case you’re trying to avoid sunburn as much as you can. A windbreaker could come in handy in case a spontaneous rainstorm breaks loose or maybe to just protect you if you feel a little chilly in the early morning. Polarized sunglasses are a must since they’ll protect your delicate eyes from the glare off the water, which can get quite aggressive.

Repeat after me: SPF is my best friend! Sunscreen and a lip balm with SPF shall be your best guardians against the harmful rays you’ll be exposed to for hours and hours. Do yourself a favor and save the tanning oil for another time.

¡Tip: Another essential to pack is motion sickness medication. Take it at least 30 minutes before your deep sea fishing trip!

When is the best time to go deep sea fishing?

Of course, this will depend on where you’re planning to fish. For convenience purposes, in this article, we will assume you are planning to fish in Cancun…why else would you end up in an article titled “Deep sea fishing Cancun”, right?

The best time for deep sea fishing Cancun will also depend on the catch you’re after. Cancun is blessed with a privileged location between the Gulf of Mexico, the great Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, which yields a wide variety of species year-round, however, big-game fishes tend to be a bit more seasonal, each of them within their own cycle.

Cancun’s most popular blue-water fish, the sailfish, is most abundant during the months from December to July.

¡Tip: If you’re looking for the best season where most deep-sea fishes will be around, late spring (May-June) is the time for you!

How much does it cost to go deep sea fishing in Cancun?

Traditionally, blue-water fishing has been viewed as an activity almost exclusive to the wealthy. Very few people have the economic power to purchase and maintain their own boats, electronics, tackle and operating costs in general (such as fuel, insurance, etc). Deep sea fishing requires much more resources due to its higher grade of difficulty, as opposed to shallow water fishing, which is why most people prefer to simply hire a fishing charter.

Aquaworld Cancun offers two fishing charter options, to accommodate different budgets and preferences: private or shared.

Private fishing charters start at $696 USD for 4 hours, while shared fishing charters cost $165 USD for 6 hours.
