Snorkeling with Whale Sharks in Mexico

Snorkeling with whale sharks in Mexico is definitely a tour you must add to your vacation plans during your trip to Cancun or the surrounding area. It is a once in a lifetime experience you will always remember!

About Whale Sharks

Whale sharks are known as the world’s biggest fish, they are very gentle and friendly. These filter-feeding sharks can reach 18 meters long and weigh more than 20 tons. They usually live in warm tropical oceans and have a lifespan of about 70 years.

According to a recent study from University Of Western Australia, the reason why whale sharks often swim close to the surface, besides the time when they are filtering plankton, is that they need to warm up after diving through cold waters.
The warm waters off the island of Holbox and the island of Contoy (close to Cancun) are especially appealing to the whale sharks. These two islands are the most popular destinations for swimming with whale sharks in the Peninsula of Yucatan.

These giant creatures may look large and scary but they are completely harmless since they feed mainly on plankton. These fascinating animals are like a deity for the Vietnamese culture and are called “Sir Fish”.
