Xcalak is a village which acquires most of its income through the fishing business of the residents. Though, during the 1900s this place was a control post for the Mexican Navy, within a few years the place grew in population and produced up to 300 tons of cocoa every month.

However, all that did not last long. As the region is prone to hurricanes, in 1955 most of the establishment was destroyed by one. The area is under the control of the tourism department of the state which is trying to establish new ways of promoting tourism here.

Though the development speed is quite slow as compared to its neighboring cities, Cancun and Playa del Carmen, the village, and the reef do attract a fair amount of visitors every year.
