The Xcalak reefs are located on the lower coast of Quintana Roo, it is one of the few virgin places on the Costa Maya, although its town is little known, the reef is very popular for its great beauty and the ease with which sports are practiced aquatic and snorkeling.
Xcalak was a fishing and coffee town and from 1,900 it was put under control of the Mexican Navy, within a few years the place grew and came to produce up to 300 tons of cocoa each month, however the region lost this option for being an area prone to hurricanes.
The development of its growth is slow compared to the cities that adjoin it; Cancun and Playa del Carmen. However, the beautiful reef brings hundreds of tourists to practice snorkeling and diving in its beautiful waters.

The National Commission of Protected Natural Areas together with the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT) it protects this coastal zone so that the reefs are under a signpost and foreign crews are warned of the existence of the beautiful reefs and the boats do not sail along the coast.
